Job Brief:
We're looking for an experienced WordPress developer to provide ongoing development coverage and support a content-rich marketing site built on a custom PHP theme and hosted on WP Engine. You'll keep the site stable, secure, and up to date, respond when issues come up, and take on development work as the team's needs evolve. You'll need to work independently and communicate clearly with nontechnical stakeholders.
Responsibilities:
Maintain and support a custom WordPress theme built with PHP, Advanced Custom Fields (ACF), and custom post types
Perform routine WordPress core, plugin, and theme updates, testing changes in staging before they go to production
Respond to and resolve urgent production issues, such as site outages, broken functionality, plugin conflicts, and security concerns
Answer support questions from content and marketing teams and help them work effectively in WordPress.
Troubleshoot and debug issues across the WordPress site Take on development requests as they arise, such as new templates, ACF components, integrations, and enhancements
Manage the site within WPEngine's staging and production environments, including backups and restore points
Work within a Git and GitHub pull-request workflow, and help establish or improve version control and deployment practices where needed
Keep the site's PHP version and dependencies current and supported on WPEngine
Document fixes, processes, and site architecture so knowledge isn't lost
Requirements:
5+ years of professional WordPress development experience, with a focus on custom themes rather than page builders
Strong proficiency in PHP, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
Deep experience with ACF, custom post types, taxonomies, and WordPress template hierarchy
Experience maintaining and troubleshooting production WordPress sites, including plugin conflicts, updates, and security hardening
Hands-on experience with WPEngine or a similar managed WordPress host
Comfort working in Git and GitHub with a pull-request-based workflow
Working experience with Next.js and React, enough to maintain and troubleshoot an existing application
Familiarity with consuming WordPress data via the REST API or WPGraphQL
Strong written communication and the ability to work independently with minimal oversight Nice to have
Experience with CI/CD deployments (e.g., GitHub Actions to WPEngine)
Technical SEO experience, such as structured data, redirects, sitemaps, and site performance (Core Web Vitals)
Familiarity with web accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA)
Experience integrating marketing tools such as forms, analytics, and tag managers
